OCR: 1921 ] At the request of the Canadian government, on 21 November 1921, King George V granted new arms to Canada, replacing those of 1868. Instead of the Arms of the four original provinces on the shield, the proclamation substituted the three lions of England, the lion of Scotland, the harp of Ireland, and three fleurs-de-lis of France. On the lower third of the shield, to symbolize Canada, there were three green maple leaves on a single stem. Above the shield, there was a helmet covered with a mantle of red and white cloth, indicating the colours of Canada. A small lion holding a single red maple leaf was standing above the helmet on a twisted wreath of red and white. A lion holding a lance with a Union Jack supported the left side of the shield and a unicorn holding a lance with a fleurs-de-lis banner supported the right. An Imperial Crown surmounted the entire crest. Below the shield, there was a wreath of roses, thistles, shamrocks, and lilies on which there was a scroll bearing the motto, "A Mari Usque Ad Mare", "from sea to sea"
